These day umbrellas that open and close on the press of a button are very common. Some manufacturers have gone to the extent of making umbrellas that can open as soon as a water droplet falls on them. They are yet to be perfected however and are not as common as the button umbrellas.

In the olden days, one had to use the principles of physics to practice as soon as the speed of wind rose or otherwise the umbrella would invert and even break. These days one can look for umbrellas that use a double canopy which not only increases the weight but also allows the wind to pass through them. The older canopy did not let wind’s passage and therefore got inverted every now and then.

Besides the technological innovations, there are changes in the styles and sizes of umbrellas. These days’ people can buy umbrellas of various sizes so that they do not have to fear about getting entangled with the fellow pedestrians and face embarrassment in the middle of the street. There are umbrellas that have a telescopic shaft technology which do not expand to the entire size but only to the three fourths or half of the maximum limit. This makes the umbrella and ideal choice for one and also two people.

The materials used in the canopy have also changes. Nylon was the most widely used material in the earlier times but now a new material called the ply pongee is being used which makes the umbrella lighter and is also very durable. This material makes the umbrella multipurpose as it can also offer good protection from the sun because of its sun rays’ reflective nature.
